The First Bone Marrow Transplant in a public hospital in Pakistan
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of many people the Simone Montomoli Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit has become a reality at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad. On January 29th the first actual transplant procedure was performed on a 4 year-old child with thalassemia major who received bone marrow stem cells from his compatible 24 year-old brother. The procedure was performed by Dr.Tahira Zafar and Dr.Naila Yaqub form the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences with the supervision of Dr.Pietro Sodani from the Mediaterranean Institute of Hematology, Rome (Director Professor Guido Lucarelli).
