Achievements and milestones

September 2010
Completed 35 bone marrow transplantations in Pakistan and the first children are now 2 years after transplantation and definitively cured. All procedures performed by Pakistani teams.

August 2010
The first children with leukemia ever treated entirely in Kosovo have completed their 2-year therapy.

September 2009
The first 20 bone marrow transplant procedures in children with thalassemia in Pakistan supported by Cure2Children with outcomes comparable to those obtained in Italy (with one tenth of the cost!).

January  2009
The first child ever to undergo bone marrow transplantation in a public hospital in Pakistan. This procedure was applied for thalassemia major and the cost has been approximately  6.000 Euro including  drugs and tests covering the whole treatment (approximately 8 months) , excluding personnel and overheads.

January 2009
Establishment of the "Simone Montomoli" Bone Marrow Transplant Unit for the cure of children with thalassemia major, and other severe diseases, at the Pakistan institute of medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. It is the first such unit in a public hospital in Pakistan. Cost: Approximately 25.000 Euro. (read)  (photos1 & photos2)

December 2008
Support to the development of a bone marrow transplant unit in a private hospital, the  Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. Financial support for the transplant procedure and for involved families during the whole treatment period (8 months). Cost: approximately 15.000 Euro for each of the initial 2 children.

November 2008
Selection and training of the personnel involved in the transplant unit at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad: 5 unit nurses,  1 head nurse,  2 laboratory technicians, 1 data manager, 1 secretary, 1 driver. Total cost for hiring this personnel: Approximately 4.000 Euro per month.

September 2008
The first children with leukemia ever treated in Kosovo. Cost: Approximately 2.000 Euro to cover the required drugs for the whole two-year treatment period for each child.

September 2008
Third training course for 40 physicians and nurses in Islamabad with the participation of 3 Italian transplant specialists and a nurse form a major US center in addition to local professionals. Cost: Approximately 10.000 Euro.

August 2008
Cure of the first child with thalassemia major in Pakistan according to the same procedure employed in Italy at an already established center: the National Institute of Blood Diseases in Karachi. Cost: Approximately 15.000 Euro per child including family support (in Italy the expense would have been 10 times higher).

At present a total of 10 children have undergone transplantation. On April 17 2009, the first child together with his family went back to his home town cured of thalassemia and in good health.

July 2008
Second meeting and training course for physicians and nurses at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore. Cost: Approximately 10.000 Euro. (photos)

Implementation of the trial version of the online tools for information management and patient registration, as well as our administration software to allow donors to track their donations. Cost: Approximately 30.000 Euro.

March 2008
Meeting in Siena with 12 health professionals from different Pakistani institutions. Cost: Approximately 18.000 Euro. (photos)
